What is Solid Internal Plastering?

Introduction

Solid plastering is a skilled technique used in construction and renovation projects to create a smooth, durable, and aesthetically pleasing finish on walls and ceilings.

It involves the application of a mixture of a binder, sand, and water, commonly known as plaster.

Plasters are applied in two or more coats. On masonry walls, the first coat is known as the scratch (or backing coat). The purpose of the scratch coat is to even out the surface of the wall and make it plumb (vertical). If the wall is particularly uneven, it may be necessary to apply a 'dubbing out' coat to reduce the thickness of the scratch coat.

A finish coat of plaster is then applied to the scratch coat.

Traditionally, from Roman times onwards, the binder would have been lime. However, in the 19th century lime was replaced by cement scratch coat and a gypsum.finishing coat. This was because cement and gypsum set in a number of hours, whereas lime has carbonate over a period of weeks.

Now, gypsum has generally replaced cement as the backing coat. This product is is known as 'Hardwall' and is manufactured by British Gypsum. Gypsum is used as the backing coat because a cement backing coat needs 4-7 days to dry out and shrink, whereas the finishing coat can be applied to Hardwall after it has set (normally around 2 hours).

Generally the finishing coat is Multi Finish manufactured by British Gypsum.

The Art of Solid Plastering

Solid plastering is an art form that requires precision and expertise. It has been used for centuries to enhance the beauty and functionality of buildings. Whether it's a residential home or a commercial space, solid plastering can transform the look and feel of any interior.

Why Choose Solid Plastering?

Solid plastering offers several advantages over other finish options. Here are a few reasons why you should consider solid plastering for your next construction or renovation project:

  1. Durability: Solid plaster is highly resistant to cracking and damage, ensuring a long-lasting finish that can withstand daily wear and tear.
  2. Versatility: Solid plastering can be used on various surfaces, including brick, concrete, concrete blocks, and stone, making it a versatile choice for different construction applications.
  3. Noise Reduction: Solid plaster acts as an excellent sound barrier, reducing noise transmission between rooms and enhancing acoustic comfort.
  4. Insulation: Solid plastering can improve thermal insulation, helping to keep your space cool in summer and warm in winter, reducing energy consumption and costs.

The Process of Solid Plastering

Solid plastering requires skill and attention to detail. Here's a step-by-step breakdown of the process:

  1. Surface Preparation: Before applying plaster, the surface must be clean, dry, and free from any loose particles or contaminants. Any cracks or imperfections in the surface should be repaired.
  2. Application of Bonding Agent: Sometimes it is necessary to apply a bonding agent to improve adhesion between the plaster and the wall/ceiling. This ensures a strong and durable finish.
  3. Mixing and Application: The plaster is mixed and then applied to the surface using a trowel and hawk.
  4. Leveling and Smoothing: The plaster is spread and leveled using a straightedge or trowel to achieve a smooth and even surface. This process may require multiple coats, depending on the desired finish.
  5. Finishing Touches: Once the plaster is dry, it can be painted or finished in a number of ways.
